Run by Women in Technology Western Austraila, a Techtrails STEM school incursion is a full day of interactive activities, story telling, career exploration, and busting STEM myths. The program is designed to generate passion, excitement and curiosity to inspire young people to consider careers in the world of science, technology, engineering, maths (STEM) and innovation. While meeting some of Western Australia’s most inspirational professionals and entrepreneurs, students develop a deeper understanding of how STEM skills taught in class today can be applied in real-world contexts.
Structure of the Day
- An opening presentation to all students and teachers
- Students start rotating through their sessions in groups of 20-30 per classroom
- In each session students get to meet a STEM industry role model, hear their personal story of what pathway they studied and the opportunities they chose, how they pursued their passions, discover ‘what a day in the life of a STEM role model looks like’, and explore Jobs of the Future.
- Role models then provide a curated hands on activity for students, relevant to 21st century skills such as: innovative thinking, creativity and effective problem-solving
