About Stela Solar
Stela Solar is a change maker in the world of artificial intelligence and an inspiring role model for young girls interested in STEM. As the Director of the National Artificial Intelligence Centre at CSIRO’s Data61, Stela is dedicated to harnessing the power of AI to create value for Australian people, businesses, and the country. Through her career she has become an expert in leveraging emerging technologies to drive business transformation and innovation.
A Journey of Passion and Expertise
Stela’s path to becoming a leading figure in AI began with her studies at the University of Sydney, where she earned a Masters of Interaction Design and Electronic Arts, and the University of New South Wales, where she completed a Bachelor of Commerce. Her diverse educational background has equipped her with the STEM skills needed to navigate the complex world of technology and business.
Before joining CSIRO, Stela held prominent roles in the tech industry, including Global Director of AI Solutions Sales and Strategy at Microsoft. During her time at Microsoft, she led a global team focused on making AI solutions accessible to customers worldwide. Her innovative approaches and strategic initiatives resulted in significant business growth and widespread recognition.
Leading the National AI Centre
Since taking the helm at the National Artificial Intelligence Centre in January 2022, Stela has been instrumental in shaping its direction and impact. She established three National Think Tanks to address critical issues such as Responsible AI, Diversity & Inclusion in AI, and AI at Scale. Under her leadership, the Centre launched the world’s first Responsible AI Network of Knowledge Partners, aimed at developing collaboration and innovation in the AI space.
Commitment to Women in STEM
Stela Solar is not only a leader in AI but also a fervent advocate for women in STEM. She understands the challenges women may face in the tech industry and is dedicated to breaking down barriers. As a mentor for various initiatives, including The New York Academy of Sciences Global STEM Alliance, Stela empowers young women to pursue STEM careers. Beyond the Office
When she’s not leading advancements in AI, Stela enjoys competitive sailing and playing the cello and piano. We just love that not only does she have an awe inspiring career, but that she keeps her personal hobbies part of her daily life.
